Is your perfume yin & kind to others or a little more yang, a little too strong & potentially harming others?

Updated: Feb 2

The cleaner I become as a meditating yogini the more I notice strong chemical outgassing smells from deodorants and perfumes. The entrance of my nostrils actually feel a chill and my myofascial fluid activates. Turning up to the organic oil scent infused yoga class at Modern Movement, the yoga studio I first trained at to be a Yoga Teacher, early enough to gain the zen state for my practice, I am challenged when someone sits next to my well selected yoga spot gassing me with their overpowering perfume or deodorant.

Should I move at the risk of offending or stay sitting here and cop it? This is a mindful dilemma, offend my neighbour or stay and do some clever breath work avoidance!

I have since spoken to one of the yoga teacher trainers to find out she too finds the offensive deodorant and perfume scents laced with toxic chemicals far too invasive and often sickening. What are the culprits in these unhealthy products and how to avoid them to make healthier life choices and perhaps even longevity?

Phthalates and parabens

These two culprits are used to preserve or scent and they can be the cause of you having flu like symptoms or headaches. These endocrine-disrupting chemicals mimic estrogen, and have been associated with increased breast cancer risk.

Phthalates and parabens are used widely in personal care products such as deodorant, perfume, shampoo, beauty lotions, nail polish and more.

Switching to phthalate and paraben-free personal care products

This could reduce the risk of developing breast cancer, according to new research published in Science Direct. Read here.
